The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset is hosting a Transgender Family Support Group, the first of its kind in Central Jersey.
SOMERVILLE - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset and The Pride Center of New Jersey have launched a new Transgender Family Support Group - the first of its kind in the region - to help spouses, partners and adult children better understand, accept and cope with their transgender family members.
The first meeting will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, 110 Rehill Ave., according to a news release.
"At the Robert Wood Johnson Health System, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of our mission," said Cheri Wilson, director, Diversity and Inclusion at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. "We recognize the unique issues and challenges that our transgender patients and their families face and we are pleased to partner with The Pride Center to offer this important new resource for families in our community."

Beginning with the April meeting, the free support group will meet monthly on the third Thursday of each month.
"Family members are dealing with an array of emotions and have many questions and concerns when first learning about a loved one's gender transition," said Nicole Brownstein, a support group facilitator for The Pride Center. "Our goal is to provide a confidential forum where they can share their feelings and find support from others in the same situation."
The group will be led by facilitators from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset and The Pride Center of New Jersey. A light dinner will be served at each meeting.
