The 300-mile four-day tour starts in New Jersey and ends in Washington, D.C.
BOUND BROOK -- Three borough police officers will be joining approximately 2,000 officers from across the country to ride in the 20th annual Police Unity Tour to commemorate officers who have died in the line of duty, Capt. Kevin Rivenbark announced in a news release Friday.
Bound Brook police Lt. Vito Bet, Det. Tony Munoz and Officer John Bojtos will participate in the 300-mile bicycle ride from New Jersey to Washington, D.C.
The four-day tour, which runs Monday through Thursday, will make a stop at Bound Brook Police Headquarters for a brief ceremony at the Kriney Memorial, which was dedicated last year to honor Officer Sam Kriney, the only borough police officer to die in the line of duty. He died Oct. 29, 1931.
The riders are expected to arrive at Bound Brook Police Headquarters on Monday between 1 and 2 p.m. The public is invited.
Bound Brook officer to be honored
On Friday, law enforcement officials from across the nation will converge on the Nation's Capital to honor fallen officers and the families left behind. The tribute will include a candlelight vigil and ceremonies at the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial.
Lt. Bet, who is riding in his second tour, will be riding in honor of Watchung Officer Matthew Melchionda, who died March 8, 2006, and Kriney.
Det. Munoz, who is riding in his fifth tour, will be honoring New Jersey State Police Trooper Scott Gonzalez, who died Oct. 24, 1997, and Kriney.
Officer Bojtos, who is taking part in his 12th tour, will be honoring Kriney and Melchionda.
