I-78 backed up for miles after dump truck spills mulch

A dump truck overturned, spilling mulch over two lanes of eastbound Interstate 78 east of exit 20 on Monday, May 9, 2016.

CLINTON TWP. - A dump truck overturned, spilling mulch over two lanes of eastbound Interstate 78 east of exit 20 on Monday, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The accident was reported at mile marker 22.2 shortly after 3:30 p.m. As of 4:45 p.m. the right and center lanes remain blocked, resulting in delays of up to 30 minutes. Eastbound traffic is backing up to exit 17 (Route 31) and exit 18 (Route 22). Delays are also being reported on Route 22.

There are also rubbernecking delays of up to 20 minutes on the westbound side of Interstate 78 near the accident, with traffic slow past exit 26 (Rattlesnake Bridge Road) in Bedminster Township in Somerset County.

So far in 2016, there have been 32 reported accidents on the stretch of Interstate 78 running from Interstate 287 in Somerset County to the Pennsylvania border.
