Meet the N.J. triplets graduating from RVCC on Saturday

Stephany Rumrill, Shawn Rumrill and Shayna Rumrill, triplets from Flemington, will be graduating from Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg on Saturday, May 14, 2016.

BRANCHBURG - Triplets from Flemington will be graduating from Raritan Valley Community College on Saturday, and one of them has been named student commencement speaker.

Shawn Rumrill, 21, who will be the commencement speaker, came to the two-year college in the fall of 2013 after earning a high school diploma through Kolbe Academy's home school program. 

He and his sisters, Shayna and Stephany, have maintained 4.0 grade point averages and will be attending The College of New Jersey in the fall.

Saturday's commencement begins at 10 a.m. and will be held at the college's soccer field at its main campus located at 118 Lamington Road. Over 1,200 are expected to be awarded associate degrees or certificates.

Gemar Mills, principal of Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, will deliver the commencement address.

Shawn, who has had a dual major in chemistry and pre-medical professional, is a Galileo Scholar and has been actively involved in student life on campus. He received Phi Theta Kappa's Distinguished Member Award for his work on the TD Bank Leadership Development series and subsequent nomination by chapter officers.

He also serves as a senator for the Student Government Association, where he began a campus-wide shoe collection to donate to Soles for Souls. He has received a number of awards and honors, including the Academic Award for Excellence as a pre-medical professional major. Shawn plans to study biology and chemistry and eventually hopes to pursue a career in molecular biology and genetics.

Newark leader to speak at RVCC commencement

Stephany is a member of the All-State Academic Team. Her major is Education: P-5, and she is receiving the Academic Award for her major. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Psi Beta Honor Society.

She has been working at the Children's Campus (childcare center) at the college and her goal is to obtain a Master's Degree in early childhood education or psychology and eventually to be a lead teacher in a preschool class.

Shayna is also a Galileo Scholar and is receiving the Academic Award for her major, chemistry. She is also receiving a degree in physics and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Psi Beta Honor Society.

Shayna has served as vice president of the Engineering Club and was part of a student engineering team that created an induction-powered flashlight. Her goal is to become a chemical or materials engineer.
