Monahan, who was later transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital-New Brunswick, told police he accidentally shot himself in the foot while camping in a wooded area in Piscataway, the affidavit said. He also told officers the weapon was in his vehicle parked outside the medical facility, the affidavit said.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for his vehicle and found a loaded Para 1911 .45 caliber pistol, two loaded magazines, two bullet-proof vests and a pair of handcuffs, the affidavit said. Monahan didn't have a New Jersey Firearms Identification Card and he is not employed by any law enforcement agency, the affidavit said.
Monahan is being held in the Somerset County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 cash or bond bail.
