The resident returned home Thursday morning to find her house ransacked and the burglar sleeping face down on the floor
HILLSBOROUGH -- A South Bound Brook man has been charged with burglary after a resident found him asleep Thursday morning on a bedroom floor with a backpack full of stolen items, police said.
The resident took photos of Alexander T. Torres, 24, after she discovered him sleeping in the Nostrand Road house on June 2 at 7:40 a.m., acting Somerset Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said.
The woman told police she arrived home that morning with her 12-year-old son and found her garage door opened, authorities said. The house had been ransacked and the woman discovered Torres face down on the floor of the master bedroom, police said.
He was wearing a black backpack, police said. The woman called 911 and then photographed Torres before he awoke and left the house without saying a word, police said.
Arriving police quickly took Torres into custody, police said. The black backpack bearing the name of the woman's son was found in a front yard. It contained electronic items and a coin that had been taken from the residence.
Torres has been charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree theft. He's being held in Somerset County Jail on $50,000 bail with a 10-percent option.
