Glimpse of History: Mule racing at the Flemington Fairgrounds

FLEMINGTON -- Mule races were a regular part of the Flemington Fair, as shown in this photo from the 1950s.

"Volunteers" -- who received some training beforehand or who were experienced with animals -- participated in the events.

According to the Flemington Speedway Historical Society, the races were held on weeknights. Here, Gladys Manners wins by a nose on Farmers' Day.
