Want an indoor pool? Or an 1860 farmhouse? A half-million dollars offers homebuyers a lot of choices in New Jersey.

A homebuyer eyeing properties in New Jersey with a half-million dollar price tag attached can afford to settle down in a four-bedroom farmhouse sitting on more than seven acres of land about a mile from the Delaware River.

But space along the waterway bordering the other side of the state is at more of a premium.

Bring the same budget in search of real estate roughly the same distance from the Hudson River in Jersey City and one of the options available is a one-bedroom condo with less than 800 square feet of living space.

While $500,000 provides potential homeowners with a lot of choices in New Jersey, the type of property one can secure within that budget largely depends on where they want to buy. Real estate prices fluctuate widely county to county and town to town within the most densely populated state in the nation.

Take a half-million dollars to a small community along the southern tip of New Jersey and it can land a property that is even smaller than the Jersey City condo but one that offers the laid-back atmosphere of life at the beach.

Head to Somerset County and a three-bedroom ranch on an acre of land in Bedminster is among the properties that fit that budget. Or check out a four-bedroom in Colonial in Maplewood that's selling for $499,900

Explore those properties, as well as other half-million-dollar homes in communities throughout the Garden State, in the gallery above.
