BRIDGEWATER -- Two employees of a local quarry suffered minor injuries Wednesday night when a conveyor belt system exploded while maintenance was being performed on it, police said.

The system caught fire after the explosion at Stavola Quarry on Thompson Avenue but the blaze was quickly extinguished, police said in a news release. The incident occurred at about 9:40 p.m.

The employees who were injured were treated on the scene and remained on site, police said.

Messages placed to the Bridgewater quarry and the main office in Tinton Falls have not yet been returned.

Stavola Asphalt in Bridgewater paid $1,000 in 2006 to settle a federal safety violation for failure to guard openings in floors, walls and holes.

Two employees of Stavola Contracting were killed in Oct. 2008 when they were struck by a car that drove through a work zone on the New Jersey Turnpike in Elizabeth. The company was not accused of violating any safety regulations in that incident.
