The annual race has raised more than $17 million for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.

FAR HILLS -- Legalized betting at the annual Far Hills Race Meeting is a signature away.

The state Senate unanimously approved the measure by a 38-0 vote Monday and it now moves on to the desk of Gov. Chris Christie.

The state Assembly unanimously passed the bill on June 2 to allow the New Jersey Racing Commission to grant a special two-day permit each year to allow wagering on steeplechase races.

The Senate bill was sponsored by state Sen. Kip Bateman (R-District 16) and state Sen. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-District 21).

"I've attended the race for more than 30 years and am glad that we can make this great New Jersey tradition even stronger," Bateman said in a news release. "It's a rare piece of legislation that benefits healthcare, charity and the environment, but this bill checks all of those boxes."

Tailgating at Far Hills Race is an art form

The 96th running of the Far Hills races at Moorland Farm is scheduled for Oct. 15. The seven-race program is highlighted by the Grand National, America's richest steeplechase race with a $300,000 purse.

The event attracts an average of 30,000 spectators. Proceeds benefit Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset and healthcare in the region.

The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville is named in honor of the race, which has raised more than $17 million for the medical center.

"The Far Hills Race Meeting has a long history of supporting charitable causes in the region," said Kean. "Allowing wagering will boost interest in the event, support New Jersey horse farms and ensure continued support for local healthcare facilities."
