N.J. teacher charged in sexual assault of student

Nicholas Kita, a substitute teacher with the Manville school district, was arrested and charged on Aug. 10, 2016, after allegedly having sexual contact with a 16-year-old student.

MANVILLE -- A substitute teacher in the borough's public school district has been arrested and charged with having sexual contact with a 16-year-old female student, Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said in a news release Thursday.

Nicholas Kita, 23, a 2011 graduate of Manville High School, has been accused of having inappropriate contact with the student while on borough school property, according to the release.

Kita had allegedly been communicating with the student via a cell phone before the alleged sexual assault, it was stated in the release. The incident was reported on March 17.

The communications between Kita and the victim were of a sexual nature, according to the release.

According to district information, Kita was paid $95 per day to be a substitute teacher in the district during the 2014-15 school year. He was also paid $9 per hour to be the district's student photographer for the 2010-11 school year.

Kita graduated from Rowan University in 2015, according to published information and his LinkedIn page. He also runs a photography business specializing in weddings and portraits, according to a Facebook page.

Kita, arrested at his residence on Wednesday, has been charged with third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact. He posted a $30,000 bail with a 10 percent option.
