Students participate in archaeology dig at Vanderveer House.
BEDMINSTER -- Elementary and middle schoolers dug deep into history this summer at an archaeology camp held at the historic Jacobus Vanderveer House, former home and headquarters of Revolutionary War Gen. Henry Knox.
During the first week of the two-week program, campers attended sessions at Bernards High School that helped prepare them for their second week, which involved participating in a dig at Vanderveer House.
At the dig, campers worked alongside camp director Keri Sansevere, an anthropology instructor at Monmouth University, and a group of graduate assistants, who took them step-by-step through the processes archeologists use to search for, identify and categorize artifacts. The campers found several Revolutionary War-era items on the Vanderveer property, including the fragments of an 18th century spoon.
It is the second year for Archeology Camp, which concluded earlier this month and was offered through a collaboration by the Somerset Hills YMCA and the Jacobus Vanderveer House, a nonprofit organization.
