The state Department of Transportation is holding a public information session Aug. 30, 2016, in Bedminster on a project to improve the Interstates 287 and 78 interchange.
BEDMINSTER - The state Department of Transportation is holding a public information session 4-7 p.m. Tuesday on a project to improve the Interstates 287 and 78 interchange.
The interchange, which includes ramps to and from Routes 202-206, is often congested. It is also the site of a number of accidents. The public will be able to review plans and ask questions.
The meeting is being held at the township's municipal building, 1 Miller Lane. The $27.5 million project, expected to begin in September, is slated to be done by December 2019.
According to the Department of Transportation, all lanes will remain open during the morning and evening commutes. There will be some lane closures during the day and on weekends, including overnight lane closures.
Fatal accident was 7th on this stretch of I-78
The project includes:
- A new flyover ramp from eastbound Interstate 78 connecting with a right side entry to northbound Interstate 287 by a new loop. This new ramp will eliminate the existing ramp along with its left side entry to northbound Interstate 287 Northbound.
- The new flyover ramp will require construction of two new bridges spanning over the existing northbound Interstate 287 to the westbound Interstate 78 ramp and over southbound Interstate 287.
- The existing ramp from northbound Interstate 287 to eastbound Interstate 78 will be shifted further to the south to provide room to construct the new loop ramp.
- The lanes of northbound Interstate 287 will be realigned so the fourth northbound through lane originates on the right side of the roadway at the new loop ramp entry. It currently begins on the left side entry.
- Realignment of the existing northbound 287 ramp to southbound Routes 202-206 and an auxiliary lane along southbound Routes 202-206.
