HILLSBOROUGH - A basement fire at a Dewitt Lane condominium has left one unit uninhabitable, police reported.
Police and firefighters responded to a smoke condition at the residence at 6:44 a.m. Sunday. A small fire was found in the basement, and the only person home at the time, as well as neighbors, were evacuated, police said.
Although the fire was quickly extinguished, the residence had minor fire and smoke damage, resulting it in being determined to be uninhabitable. No other units were damaged.
The fire was investigated by the township police and the Fire Safety Bureau. It is not believed to be suspicious, and the investigation is continuing, police said.
Responded to the fire were Hillsborough Fire Departments 36, 37, 38, 48 and the Finderne Fire Company, along with the Hillsborough Rescue Squad, township Office of Emergency Management, township building department and PSE&G.
