The number of people given citations has been lower since 55 were arrested in 2013
FAR HILLS -- Thirty-five people were arrested at the Far Hill Race Meeting on Saturday, a decline from previous years, officials said.
The arrests were primarily for offenses such as drug possession, public urination, simple assault and resisting arrest, Far Hills police chief Michael DeCarolis said.
About 40,000 people attended the steeplechase fundraiser at Moorland Farm.
Last year 37 people were arrested, while 36 were charged at the 2014 event. In 2013, police arrested 55.
Approximately 200 law enforcement officers were at this year's race, including roughly 100 state troopers.
The seven-race card, which attracted an international field of horses and jockeys, was highlighted by a record total purse of $700,000 -- an increase of $100,000 over last year and the richest steeplechase in the country.
Editor's note: The story has been updated to reflect the correct number of arrests at this year's event.
