Ernesto Layton was charged with drunken driving and related charges following the April 8 crash.

MONTGOMERY -- A Mercer County man was intoxicated when he caused a collision on Route 601 earlier this month, Montgomery police said.

Ernesto Layton, 42, of Lawrence, was charged with drunken driving and related charges following the 2:30 p.m. crash on April 8, police said.

Police, firefighters and EMS arrived at the crash near Route 518 and found a Jeep on its side and its 85-year-old driver with a head injury. Bystanders helped him out of his vehicle.

The other vehicle, a Scion, left the scene, witnesses told police. Officers drove after it and found it a short time later, with Layton driving.

Police said the Jeep was southbound on Route 601 and Layton was northbound when he attempted to turn left into a driveway and crossed into the southbound lane, hitting the Jeep.

Police said they noticed Layton was apparently intoxicated and later charged him with drunken driving, driving while suspended, being an unlicensed driver, leaving the scene of a crash and failure to report it, failing to maintain his lane and and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, police said.

The Jeep driver, an adult passenger in his vehicle and Layton were treated at local hospitals for their injuries.
