Woman killed by son in Central Jersey stabbing is identified

The woman killed in the April 17, 2017, stabbing on Washington Valley Road has been identified as Helen Litwornia, 61, the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office confirmed on April 19, 2017.

BRIDGEWATER - The woman killed in Monday's stabbing at a Washington Valley Road residence has been identified as Helen Litwornia, 61, the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Wednesday.

Litwornia and her husband, identified by property records as Stephen Litwornia, 61, were stabbed by their son, Michael Litwornia, 27, it has been confirmed. Stephen remains hospitalized following emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition on Tuesday. His latest condition was not available on Wednesday.

An autopsy performed by the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office determined Helen Litwornia died as the result of sharp force trauma to the neck, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said. Her death has been classified as a homicide.

Michael Litwornia, who is still in a local hospital where he is recovering from  self-inflicted wounds, has been charged with first-degree murder and second-degree aggravated assault, it was previously reported.

Man charged in fatal stabbing of parents, prosecutor says

When police first arrived at 8:20 p.m. on Monday they found Stephen Litwornia outside his home with severe stab wounds and lacerations, it was previously reported. Additional officers found Helen Litwornia inside the home with multiple stab wounds and lacerations.

They quickly removed her from the home, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Michael Litwornia, who had barricaded himself inside and refused to communicate, was taken into custody at 11 p.m. after a remote-controlled robot sent into the home showed him lying on a couch.

He attempted to grab a sharp instrument as members of the Somerset County SWAT stormed the residence, but was quickly subdued and taken into custody.
