Two State Police troopers helped deliver a baby on the side of Interstate 287 in Somerset County on April 25, 2017.

BRIDGEWATER - Two State Police troopers helped deliver a baby on the side of Interstate 287 in Somerset County on Tuesday morning.

On a cloudy, rainy day in the Garden State, Trooper  Tony Lee and Trooper Luis Valle, both of Troop "B" Somerville Station, assisted in the delivery Mateo Ingles on the side of Interstate 287 at exit 14, the state police posted on Facebook.

At approximately 8:04 a.m., Cecelia Ingles, who was in labor, was being driven to the hospital by her husband, Lou Ingles, when he had to stop on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 287 because Cecelia Ingles believed she was not going to make it in time, state police said.

Lou Ingles was able to get the attention of Valle, who was nearby on a motor-vehicle stop. Minutes later, Lee, who also stopped, and Vale helped deliver Mateo.

When paramedics arrived they did not have a clamp so that the umbilical cord could be cut. Lee used his phone charger to tie off the cord so it could be cut, state police said.

Mom and baby were transported by ambulance to St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick where they were listed in stable condition. Mateo weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds, 11 ounces.
