BEDMINSTER - Ongoing bridge work beginning Tuesday night will require the closure and detour of the Interstate 78 westbound ramp to Interstate 287 southbound in the township, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Interstate 78 westbound exit 29 ramp to Interstate 287 northbound will remain open, officials said.
Starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, the DOT's contractor, Midlantic Construction LLC, is scheduled to close the right lane on Interstate 78 westbound approaching exit 29 to Interstate 287 - Route 202-206, according to the release.
Exit 29 will be reduced to one lane and the Interstate 78 westbound exit ramp onto Interstate 287 southbound will be closed, it was stated in the release.
The work is part of a $24.5 million federally-funded interchange improvement project that will enhance safety and improve traffic operations between the existing Interstate 287 interchanges with Interstate 78 and Routes 202-206, officials stated.
The closure will allow workers to continue installation of beams on the new flyover bridge being constructed for Interstate 78 eastbound to Interstate 287 northbound. Motorists will be detoured using Interstate 287 northbound.
In addition to the ramp closure, there will be temporary 15-minute slowdowns of Interstate 287 southbound from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. to allow for the erection of the beams.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
