Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School students help the Readington Township Police Department.
BRIDGEWATER -- When the Readington Township Police Department's a MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle needed new seats, the department turned to students in the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School's (SCVTHS) Welding program for help.
According to Readington Township Police Lt. John Insabella, the MRAP is "used in the case of an active shooter, hostage rescue, emergency response, and natural disaster response, such as flooding," and theirs was in need of new bench seats. Readington Township patrolman Jack Mazellan, an SCVTHS alumnus, suggested reaching out to the welding students, who built and installed the benches.
According to the school, "the bench project gave students the opportunity to work on a unique vehicle and also allowed them to have a real-life experience they would not normally encounter."
"The police department could not be more pleased with how the bench seating has turned out," said Insabella.
