A group of 22 prisoners were transferred from the Hunterdon County Jail to the Somerset County Jail on Tuesday, the first to be moved out of the Flemington-based jail, which is closing down operations.
According to Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano, 15 women and seven men were transferred to the Somerset County Jail in Somerville.
Under the terms of a new 2-year contract, prisoners in Hunterdon County will now be housed in Somerville. Prisoner transfers began Tuesday and will continue Thursday. No prisoners were expected to be transferred today, Provenzano said.

"I think we set a good plan in motion, and we're sticking to it," Provenzano said. "It's a good transition."
According to the Hunterdon County jail website, as of Sept 4 there are 75 people being housed in the jail in Flemington.
Somerset County Freeholder Director Mark Caliguire said he was pleased with how the transfer was progressing to date.
"I heard it went smoothly," Caliguire said.
Hunterdon County will spend a minimum of $1.7 million for each year of the contract to have inmates housed in Somerville.

The county will pay Somerset a daily housing fee of $90 per prisoner based on a minimum of 50 inmates being housed there, or $1,642,500 annually. Hunterdon will also make a $70,000 annual contribution to Somerset County's Jail Improvement Fund.
The total annual cost to Hunterdon County will increase should the number of inmates being housed in Somerset rise above 50, and will be based on the daily per-inmate housing fee.
