EAST AMWELL -- In this photo taken in East Amwell in 1934, Rodney and Earl Wilcox are shown in front of the school bus driven by their father, Seward Wilcox. Wilcox transported students to and from Flemington High School.
According to the Hunterdon County Historical Society, transportation service for students from East Amwell who attended Flemington High School dates back to 1914.
Schoolbusdriver.org notes that motorized vehicles specifically designed as school buses didn't begin to appear until the late 1920s; prior to that, school buses were little more than wood-framed boxes attached to an automobile chassis.
Flemington High School, which was located on Bonnell Street, closed at the end of the 1954-55 school year and was replaced by Hunterdon Central High School, which opened at 84 Route 31 in Flemington in September 1955.
