SOMERSET -- The lockdown at Hillsborough High School early Thursday morning was the result of a discussion about a video game, according to the police and principal Karen Bingert.
At 8:01 a.m., Hillsborough police were called to the school when a staff member overheard a student talking to another about a gun, police said.The school was placed on lockdown a short time later as a safety precaution, Bingert said in a letter to students and guardians shortly after the lockdown was lifted.

Upon arrival, the police conducted an investigation and it was quickly determined that the discussion among several students was about a video game and that no one actually had a gun in the building, police said.
There was never a threat of violence, police said.
As of 9:30 a.m., there was a small police presence at the school. The letter nor police when the lockdown was lifted.
