SOMERSET -- A small plane that took off Tuesday night and was reported missing Thursday morning was found this afternoon crashed in the woods near the Somerset Airport Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
At 1 p.m., a Lake LA-4-250 was found at the airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The single-engine aircraft had departed from the airport at 9:45 p.m. on Sept. 8 and was reported missing early Thursday, the FAA said.
The names and conditions of those on board have not yet been released, the FAA said.
Jefferson Patch, quoting a source close to the investigation, said the pilot was a resident of Chester Township who took off from the airport at 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
After the initial investigation by local authorities, the FAA will conduct an investigation, the agency said. organization said. The National Transportation Safety Board will also investigate, the FAA said.Steven Parker, a manager at the airport, said the FAA just arrived on the scene as of 4 p.m.
