An open house will be held at the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater on Feb. 10.
BRIDGEWATER - Those curious about the new building built on Main Street next to the Adult Day Center and Somerset Patriots' stadium can get a preview in February.
Somerset County residents age 60 and older are being invited to preview the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater, located at 876 E. Main St., between 10 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, Feb. 10, according to a news release.
Visitors can take a tour, participate in demonstrations of upcoming programs and learn more about the variety of services and volunteer opportunities offered by the county Office on Aging and Disability Services. Demonstrations include dancercise, jazz dance, yoga, tai chi and functional fitness. Members of the Somerset County Freeholders will be on hand.
"We are looking forward to the opening of our Senior Wellness Center in Bridgewater," said Freeholder Director Patricia L. Walsh. "The new facility is large enough to host multiple activities simultaneously, which will help to satisfy diverse interests. And our location, next to the Adult Day Center, enables us to form a campus for active older adults and residents who need more care and support."
Somerset County Freeholder Brian Levine, human services liaison, said, "Our centers are not just places where people can socialize and eat a nutritious lunch. We offer computer labs, exercise programs, educational programming, craft classes, demonstrations and intergenerational activities."
The Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater is expected to open to the public on Monday,
Feb. 29. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening will be held in the spring.
The new 14,000-square-foot facility shares a driveway entrance with the Adult Day Center. The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services plans to close its Raritan location, which has been operational since 1975, after the Bridgewater center is fully open.
Clients who attended the Raritan and Manville locations can visit the new facility. The county will continue to operate its other five centers, located in Bernards, Hillsborough, Montgomery, Franklin and Warren.
Somerset County senior centers offer a wide range of programs and services, including lunches. Many of the programs and activities are made possible through partnerships, volunteers and donors, according to a news release.
