Girl, 11, told authorities she had sex with the defendant on more than one occasion.
SOMERSET -- A North Plainfield man who was charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, allegedly told authorities he thought of the girl as his girlfriend.
Roberto Carlos Amaya, 19, has been charged with first-degree sexual assault after the girl was interviewed on Monday by detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit, according to an affidavit filed by Somerset County Detective Randy Sidorski.
The girl told detectives she had sexual intercourse with a man named "Carlos" in his basement apartment in the early-morning hours of Monday, the affidavit said. She also said she had sex with him on more than one occasion between August 2015 and Sept. 14, 2015, the affidavit said.
Amaya admitted to detectives he had sex with the minor on Sept. 14 and that he considered her his girlfriend, the affidavit said.
