The victim, a 66-year-old man, was being treated at a local hospital Thursday night.
HOPEWELL BOROUGH -- Firefighters searching a burning Hopewell Borough house Thursday rescued an unconscious man from the second floor, police said.
The victim, Benjamin Primer III, 66, was carried from the home by borough firefighters and taken to Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell, where he was undergoing treatment Thursday night, police said.
Lance Maloney, police chief in Hopewell Township, which patrols the borough, said Police Officer John Ferner arrived at the single-family house on Elm Street shortly after 4 p.m. and reported flames and smoke coming from the rear of the home.
The Hopewell Fire Department, under the direction of Chief Joseph Novak, arrived a short time later and extinguished the fire, which was concentrated in the kitchen, Maloney said.
Firefighters performing a standard search found Primer.
The fire appears to be accidental, but an investigation is ongoing, Maloney said.
The home sustained fire damage in the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the home, the police chief said.
Also responding to the fire were the Pennington Fire Company, Union Fire Company, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, Lawrenceville Fire Co., and from Somerset County the Montgomery Fire Company #2 and Rocky Hill Fire Department.
Investigators from the Hopewell Township Police Department, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office and the Mercer County Fire Marshal's Office are investigating.
