Students are winners at the Junior Solar Sprints Competition.
Eliana Sussner, Esme Abbot, Sarah Young, and Anna Ramos won first place at the Junior Solar Springs Inter-County finals. WARREN -- A team of students from Warren Middle School were the Inter-County Final winners of the Junior Solar Sprints Competition, a solar car competition held May 23 at Ridgedale Middle School in Florham Park.
The team of eighth-graders -- Esme Abbot, Anna Ramos, Eliana Sussner, and Sarah Young - took the top spot with their car, the "Millenium Pigeon."
Students in grades 5 to 8 who participated in the competition, sponsored by TransOptions, a nonprofit transportation group, were challenged to use their skills to design and build solar cars, which they then put to the test in a competitive race. To participate in the finals, the teams had to win in one or more categories at one of the five divisional races, held the previous week.
In addition to their overall win, the team placed first in Craftsmanship, first in Engineering and second in Student Choice at the competition.
