Employee was a book keeper with a security clearance.
RINGOES - A former employee of Maddalena's, the catering company known for its cheesecakes, has been charged with altering financial records, resulting in a loss of $112,783.03 to the company, according to State Police.
Kay Hayes, 54, of Lambertville, allegedly wrote and cashed unauthorized checks while a bookkeeper for the company, opened an unauthorized line of credit and altered bank statements to hide her actions, State Police Trooper Alejandro Goez said Tuesday.
An investigation began last June when the owner of Maddalena's contacted the Kingwood Station Barrack in Hunterdon and reported they suspected "foul play," said Goez.
A subsequent audit of the company revealed the theft.
Maddalena's is headquartered on the outskirts of the Ringoes section of East Amwell. East Amwell has no police force of its own, so State Police are responsible for its policing.
Hayes, who was arrested on Nov. 9, has been charged with second-degree theft, second-degree identity theft, third-degree forgery and fourth-degree tampering with records. She is being held in Somerset County Jail on $50,000 bail.
