State Police identify trooper injured in serious I-78 accident

The New Jersey State Police trooper injured in a serious accident on Interstate 78 on April 3, 3017, has been identified as Jeffrey Almeida, 26, State Police announced on April 4, 2017.

WARREN TWP. - The New Jersey State Police trooper injured in a serious accident on Interstate 78 on Monday has been identified as Jeffrey Almeida, 26, State Police announced Tuesday on Facebook.

The accident, which is still under investigation, happened at 3:23 p.m. when Almeida, driving a marked Ford Crown Victoria troop car eastbound on Interstate 78 near milepost 40.8 was involved in a collision with an Acura sedan driven by Marquis Godfrey, 29, of Newark, according to State Police.

The troop car ran off the left side of the expressway, entered the grass center median and struck several trees.

Almeida, who joined the state police in Jan. 2016 and is stationed in the Somerville barracks, was trapped in the vehicle. Emergency personnel extricated him and he was airlifted to University Medical Center in Newark, where he is being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening leg injuries, State Police said.

The other driver did not report any injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts, State Police said.

The accident remains under investigation.
