BRIDGEWATER -- Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School eighth-grade student Anoushka Buddhikot took second place at the 2017 New Jersey National Geographic Bee held March 31 at Rowan University.

The National Geographic Bee is designed to spark an interest in geography for both teachers and students by testing students in grades 4 to 8 on their knowledge of the subject. Students in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Atlantic and Pacific territories and Department of Defense Dependents Schools all took part in State Bees on the same day to determine who would compete in the National Geographic Bee Championship.

Veda Bhattaram, an eighth-grade student at the Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville, captured the bee title for the second year in a row and will compete this May in the National Geographic Bee Championship in Washington, D.C. Alex Mitchell, a student at Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft, finished third.
