Nearly 50 area girls participate in the GET conference.
FRANKLIN -- On April 1, Rutgers Preparatory School hosted nearly 50 girls at a Girls Exploring Technology conference.
The girls, students from Piscataway, Franklin, New Brunswick and Rutgers Prep, gathered to listen to and interact with women who work in the fields of technology, pharmaceuticals and medicine.
Nandini Ramani, vice president of engineering at Twitter, opened the event with a talk and a Q&A for students. The students then attended breakout sessions that offered them hands-on technology and design activities that included robotics, a laparoscopic surgery demonstration, a presentation on data analytics and brainstorming for a new iPhone app; a panel discussion followed the breakout sessions.
According to Terry Ladd, Rutgers Prep director of marketing and communications, "This event, like the other G.E.T. conferences, was meant to inspire and empower young women to explore careers and areas of study in STEM, and to introduce them to some of the women who have made careers out of their passion for technology and the sciences."
