BEDMINSTER - A field of 200 American flags will be the centerpiece of a community picnic on July 2 near the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum.
During the Independence Day celebration, the public can walk through the Field of Honor, which pays tribute to men and women who have served the nation, according to a news release.
The picnic, being held 1-4 p.m., is at the adjacent River Road Park, with the Field of Honor located in the North Field. The 3-foot by 5-foot flags will be on display from Sunday through July 4. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum.
Among those expected to attend are U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-NJ), local officials, veterans and West Point alumni.
The Jacobus Vanderveer House served as headquarters for General Henry Knox during the winter of 1778-79 and is the only surviving building associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment, now recognized as America's first military training academy and the precursor to The United States Military Academy at West Point.
